Review the whole travel path
A beam immediately above the door is different from a duct farther inside the garage. Bring photographs of both areas, taken from the floor. The site assessment needs the finished opening and clearances throughout the door’s movement, rather than the ceiling height at one convenient point. Do not move brackets to create extra space.
Compare the proposed arrangement
Clopay offers low-headroom configurations, but suitability depends on the exact door and hardware. Ask the estimate to identify the selected track and spring arrangement, available vehicle clearance and compatible operator. A wall-mounted opener does not automatically make every low-headroom door workable.
Coordinate surrounding work
If lighting, storage or a ceiling finish is planned, discuss it before ordering. Record which obstructions will remain and which trades would handle changes. Keep structural alterations separate from the door installation quotation so there is no assumption that a beam can simply be removed.
Your questions
Does a low ceiling mean I need a shorter door?
Not necessarily. A suitable hardware arrangement may be possible; the complete opening and operating space need assessment first.
Can the existing opener always stay?
No. Its mounting, travel path and compatibility must be checked against the proposed low-headroom system.
